Marilena Chaui is a Brazilian philosopher and political activist. She was born on September 15, 1941, in São Paulo, Brazil. Chaui received her undergraduate degree in Philosophy from the University of São Paulo and later earned a doctorate in Philosophy from the same university. She became a professor in the Department of Philosophy at the University of São Paulo and has since become one of Brazil's most prominent philosophers.
Chaui is known for her work in critical theory and social and political philosophy. Her most influential book is "Culture and Democracy," which discusses the relationship between culture and politics in Brazil. In addition to her academic work, Chaui has been involved in political activism, particularly in the area of education. She served as Brazil's Minister of Culture from 2003 to 2004 during the presidency of Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.
Chaui continues to be an influential voice in Brazilian politics and philosophy. She has received numerous honors and awards for her work, including the Order of Cultural Merit from the Brazilian government and the Doctor Honoris Causa from the University of Buenos Aires.
